Walking and public transportation

In order to get the rest of America walking, we must improve public transportation in both urban and rural areas. Public transportation encourages people to get out of their cars and adopt more active lifestyles.

America’s first subway system was opened in Boston in 1897 followed by New York in 1904 and Philadelphia in 1908. Subways continued to grow in number and usage through the first half of the twentieth century. After 1946, however, Americans turned to the automobile, and subway use decreased for the next 25 years until the early 1970’s. The building of San Francisco’s light rail system marked the beginning of a revival for American subways. Now many cities like Atlanta, Miami, Baltimore and Washington D.C have similar systems.

The Web site, www.lightrailnow.org gives information about light rail systems all over the world. As gas and oil prices soar worldwide, the pressure for expansion of light rail systems is expected to boom. Of course, to get to the public transportation, we walk!
